Abstract

Due to preserved forests and small openness of the areas, Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) was very numerous in highland areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the past. Gradually, it has been drown to the higher altitude areas because of forestry works, poaching, forest fires, hiking and collection of forest products (it is rarely present below 1000 m). It is believed that the Capercaillie disappeared from the 1/3 of the former habitats in BiH and that the current size of its habitat is 200000 ha, while its number is estimated at less than 700 individuals. This study presents the current habitat, endangering factors and conservation measures for Capercaillie and its habitats at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
