Determination of genetic diversity of scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) in Serbia using protein markers

Protein polymorphism of seeds was researched in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Austrian pine (Pinus nigra Arn.), as the most important economic species of the genus Pinus in Serbia. This was aimed at the better understanding of the genetic potential of their populations, which would improve the production of seeds and planting stock, and thus the success in afforestation and establishment of special purpose plantations of these species. At the same time, the study results offer the basis for a better knowledge of the highly variable and specific intraspecific genetic structure, which is the initial means in the planning of the species conservation and improvement processes. The polymorphism of protein markers was determined based on the selected genotypes originating from seven populations of Scots pine and six populations of Austrian pine.
