Abstract

The variability and precision of assessment of taxation elements in high beech stands was researched in the aim of planning the sample size. Two stands of group selection all-age structure were selected, which belong to the forest of montane beech (Fagetum moesiacae montanum). The stands had approximately the same area. The systematic sample consisted of circular sample plots sized 500 m2. Altogether 60 sample plots were established, which was equal to the total area of the study stands. The coeffi cient of variation of volume was 39% and the double relative error of estimated volume in the stand area of about 30 ha, i.e. in the sample of 30 sample plots, was ±14.2%. The attained precision of assessment is not suffi cient for the reliable management planning at the stand level.
