Roof garden as a space of spectacle

Abstract

The city is a key space of culture, political and economic life and like any part of it, artifact, is rich in meaning. In XXI century the public space is a place of art, the events in which it creates a new meaning - at the request of or in spite of the ruling ideology. The value of urban space depends, among other conditions, on the quantitative but also qualitative contribution of the landscape in the physical structure of the city. All gardens, either individual or state spectacles representative, imperial gardens or Zen gardens are a reflection of the desire for power, an allegory of power, size and importance, the dream of achieving beauty, love, greatness and harmony. In this paper, roof gardens will be viewed as a spatial category but not only as an urban form, because it is a concrete roof garden space a particular meaning and represents the embodiment of certain ideas. Research are related to the development discourse of urban spectacle in the roof gardens, with a desire to review the interpretation and valorization of the public spaces in the service of the spectacle. In the paper the complex relationships of physical structure and spectacle in the case of roof gardens are explored, and the stress is on contents and socio-ecological forms of life in the physical context of the city.
