Climate characteristics of Javor Mountain in the Republic of Srpska

Abstract

This paper analyzes the climate character of Javor Mountain in the Republic of Srpska and climate change with increasing altitude from the bottom to the highest point Veliki Žep (1537 m above sea level). The aim of this research is derived from the necessity for precise climate characterization according with altitude’s increasing. The average annual temperature at the lower range of mountain is smaller than 7,0 °C, while the upper limit has 3,8 °C average annual temperature. The average annual precipitation ranges from 1002 mm (Han Pijesak) to 1120 mm (Vlasenica), and for every 100 meters, rainfall increases approximately for 26 mm. During vegetation period fell about 57% of the total amount of rainfall during the year. According to the annual climate index (Thorntwaitt - Matter’s method) whole area of research is dominated by a very humid climate type - B4, that is characterized by vegetation of high forest. According to the Lang’s classification, Javor mountain forests are in their climate - physiological optimum. Massive has mountainous climate, with continental influence from the east. At 1000 m altitude, mild - continental - mountainous climate is dominated, and above 1400 m altitude, the continental character of climate decreases.
