Morphological diversity of hairy European black poplar (Populus nigra subsp. caudina) in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Abstract

In this study we analyzed individual variability of some morphologic characteristics of hairy European black poplar (Populus nigra subsp. caudina) that originate from three natural populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Čapljina, Konjic, Bugojno). We have analyzed 10 trees out of each of the populations, and the following characteristics were the subject of our study: the length and the width of the leaf blade, the length of the stalk, the angle of insertion of the fi rst leaf nerve, and the distance from the basic leaf blade to the widest part of the leaf. We carried out a descriptive statistical analysis, and multi-variant cluster analysis based on the Euclid distance. The results showed a signifi cant deviation in the population of Čapljina compared to the populations of Konjic and Bugojno.
